Journal Entry 1

The first quarter of this book kept me reading and eager to find out what was going to happen next. At the beginning of this book, Miles Halter- nicknamed Pudge- is getting ready to leave to Culver Creek Private School to look for his great perhaps. He has no friends at his current school and is looking to start fresh at this new school.
At this school, he does just this. During the first quarter he discovers many new things about his new school, the people in it, and goes through a few different experiences. His second night at his new school, Pudge was bound with tape and thrown into the lake by schoolmates. He almost died, but luckily he survived. This was very exciting and scary to read, because I didn't know whether or not Pudge has going to survive or how he was going to escape his predicament.
His new friends influence him and Pudge starts smoking cigarettes with them on a regular basis. This reminds me very much of real life situations where teenagers will encourage, or peer pressure their friends to do something that may or may not be very good for you. Alaska Young is Pudge's friend who he finds very enticing and attractive. She is a habid smoker, and is very unpredictable and moody. After reading this part of the book, the different social status's and importance of friendship becomes clear to me. At Pudge's old school, he had no friends and therefore he was unhappy. At this new school, he has made friends and spends time with them, and it becomes clear to us that it makes him happier to have friends to rely on. I can relate to him because I would be miserable if I didn't have friends to hang out with and share my life with. Pudge's roomate, and first friend at the school, Colonel, came up with his nickname because he found it was ironic to be nickname a skinny boy Pudge. I found this entertaining because of the irony, and the ugly tone of the name Pudge. All in all, I really liked the first quarter of this book.
